Multiple, entangled tringles in the center of the screen with spaces separating every five tringles in five groups with different colors. The outer tringles having the color red, then yellow, lighter green, darker green and blue.

Motion Graphic: Abstract Space

The result of 2D animation in After Effects where I faked “space” in an optical illusion – done in After Effects

This was a submission for the course “2D Motion Graphics” at my second semester in university and our assignment was to create a sequence where some sort of “bouncing ball” animation takes place.

Workflow

Since I already gained knowledge in using Adobe After Effects at this point (from learning it in High School and having already done some work at this point e.g. during the Animation Jam), I started by storyboarding the animation.

Doing that process and doing some first tests, I started to love the idea using lines to give the feeling/illusion of space, not using the z-axis at all which resulted in the look of the bouncing ball animation. As you might notice, I started to play a lot with illusion and hypnotic elements in the following sequences – playing with light while doing so.

Conclusion

With this project, I got the feeling of simplicity and still having the weight of space illusions using simple lines combined of working with a short time schedule.
