Teaching Live Production

Abstract

During my last year studying at the university, I got the offering to teach the newly created course “Eventprodution” and leading the liveproduction team – mainly because of my constant interest and investment in doing livestreams during my study time. I was tasked to create a script for the course as well as holding all lectures in order to prepare the students the best for their final assignment: Creating a live event at the end of the semester, similar to the event I did the semester before (Semesterproject presentations). However, since this event now is covered in an official course with 100 students participating in organising, a way greater scale now is possible.

Following, I want to openly share the script I prepared for the course in order to give those interested a brief introduction as well as showing/giving a sneak peek of what I learned in that area. Since the course was held in German, I did not translate the slides to English. See the conclusion section to read about how the course turned out.

Theoretical Introduction

In order to give the students a good understanding of how livestreams are planned and especially why we still need live broadcasts, I planned the first lecture to cover these questions.

Practical Introduction

Since the last lecture is all about the theoretical understanding and the connections between the devices, the practical lecture focuses on how to use the Blackmagic Software, Hardware and how to wire them up with the correct converters. This lecture also includes stet-by-step tutorials on how to create and show “Lower Thirds”, graphics and external video footage.

Checkliste

For simpler planning when the event comes closer, I created an additional task list

The result

Unfortunately, I got sick a few days before the event which is why I wasn’t able to directly participate. However, I tried to help out the students as much as I could via messaging as they forwarded my suggestions.

Since the event took place for around two days, hence there are also two livestreams:

Day 1 of the event
Day 2 of the event

Conclusion

I am deeply grateful that I got the chance of not only tutoring but teaching what I’ve learned for this semester. For me, it was a test to not only confirm my knowledge but especially a trial whether I could pack all the information into an interesting and fun lecture. Having heard the feedback of some students, I think it is safe to say that I was successful which sparks joy. But what can I say? Seeing all these people, some of them old colleagues from previous events, succeeding in such a short time and having fun really marks the best ending for my liveproduction journey until now. Guys/Girls: I’m proud of you! It all concludes with me having a happy face with a small tear, as I’ve not been able to attend the event, helping out, celebrating and seeing everyone for the last time and yet I’m happy that they thought of me when I got mentioned in the “Special Honours” at the end of the livestream.
