This was my first experience in creating a landscape in Unreal Engine 5 and part of an assignment in the course “Environmental Arts”.
When I think of virtual worlds, I think of wide worlds to explore – places that might not exist like this in the real world. That’s also what inspired the look and feel of this work: The feeling of standing on top of a hill, a distant city in the background, dreamy lighting during a sunset … Somehow you really feel the warmth of the summer on your skin, hear the sound of birds and chirping insects in the background.
First, I intended to test two ideas in this project:
- Using volumetric clouds on surface level
- Using a 3D scanned city far in the distance in order to test the capabilities of Nanite
Though I didn’t find any capabilities in order to achieve the first goal using Unreal Engine 5.0, I achieved the second as the city blends in quite naturally in my opinion.
